About our Butterflies and Moths
We know it is a concern to our customers as well as Wings of the Woodland, as to how we acquire our butterflies and moths. As explained on our website and at the risk of being redundant, we feel it is important to mention as often as needed that our insects are not taken from the wild. None are ever harmed, endangered or illegally acquired.
We collect them ourselves from Spring to late Autumn along roadsides where sadly many meet their demise. We have been known to rehab the few that survive their brush with death by bringing them home and placing them on our butterfly bushes.
One of our main sources for acquiring butterflies and moths is our relationships with butterfly exhibits, from which we receive only their expired insects. Lastly we purchase only from legitimate butterfly farms that raise their insects for museums, educational purposes, entomologists, exhibits, etc… These farms follow strict import/export laws and are licensed from the US Fish and Wildlife Department. Purchasing from such farms creates income for less fortunate people. As a result, this protects the environment, and also discourages the illegal capturing from the wild. Sounds like an all around good thing to us.
Our oath is, and will always be, the preservation of nature and all her beauty, so that it will endure and bring joy to all that love and cherish her as we do.
